Brushing Against the Odds: The Artistic Journey of Sajeda Dawood
When Sajeda Dawood holds a paintbrush or a calligraphy pen, she doesn’t just create, she tells stories. Stories of resilience, beauty, tradition, and transformation. From intricate mandalagraphy to expressive wood and canvas paintings, her art speaks the language of courage and creativity.
Originally from Afghanistan, Sajeda arrived in Georgia with more than just dreams, she brought decades of artistic skill and a deep passion for sharing it with the world. As a proud participant in the second cohort of the Sew-Zan program, Sajeda has found a platform that helps newly arrived women like her build sustainable creative careers and reclaim their artistic voice.
On March 8, Sajeda’s talent was on full display during the Behind the Global Woman’s Gaze exhibition at Clarkston Community Center. Surrounded by community, art, and live music by Yao, Sajeda offered live calligraphy demonstrations, captivating the audience with each stroke. That night, she even sold one of her calligraphy pieces, marking a powerful milestone in her artistic journey here in the U.S.
Sajeda’s work blends tradition and modernity, with a signature style that includes Alla prima painting, antiquing, woodwork, mandalagraphy, and contemporary calligraphy. One of her standout pieces glows in the dark and features a symbolic die—reminding us that in life, we all must take chances.
Sajeda Dawood’s journey is a shining example of how art can carry hope across borders and cultures. Let’s continue to support refugee and immigrant artists who are adding beauty and meaning to our communities.
