Roots and Branches: Creative Collective Workshop
This past Saturday, the Clarkson Community Center partnered with the Veterans Community Outreach Foundation to host Roots and Branches, a special community art workshop facilitated by Executive Director Luay Sami.
The morning brought together veterans, community members, and supporters for two hours of creativity, reflection, and conversation. The theme, Roots and Branches, encouraged participants to look inward and express their personal stories through art, exploring where they’ve come from, the values and experiences that have shaped them, and how they continue to grow and give back to others.
Each participant worked on an 8x8-inch canvas, painting a tree that symbolized both their “roots” and “branches.” The roots represented personal history, service, and resilience, while the branches expressed goals, dreams, and ways they extend care to their families and communities.
For many, the workshop was not just about painting; it was about connecting, sharing, and finding healing through creative expression. Veterans reflected on their service and transitions into civilian life, while community members shared their own paths and sources of strength. Conversations around the tables flowed easily, as participants exchanged stories and encouraged each other in their art-making.
At the close of the session, all of the canvases were arranged together to form a striking collaborative collage, a symbolic forest representing the unique journeys and shared aspirations of everyone involved. This collective artwork captured the heart of the event: when individual experiences come together, they create something even more beautiful and powerful.
The Clarkson Community Center believes that art is more than just a creative outlet — it’s a tool for healing, self-expression, and building social connectedness. Events like Roots and Branches create a safe and welcoming space where people can share their stories, honor their journeys, and strengthen the bonds within our community.
