This spring, our Adult ESL Class at Clarkston Community Center wrapped up a joyful and transformative season. Meeting every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon, this diverse group of students became more than classmates — they became a community.

The classroom brought together learners from Turkey, Ethiopia, Haiti, Mali, South Sudan, and Mexico, each with a unique journey and shared determination to learn English and build a new life in the U.S.

One student from Haiti said, “Yes, it was very good and I enjoyed it very much.” Another shared, “Our teacher always tried different systems to help us learn,” a tribute to the creativity and care poured into each lesson.

The final class was a celebration — students brought snacks and fruit, and laughter filled the room during games and contests. One favorite? A timed challenge to arrange Scrabble tiles in alphabetical order — a fun and clever way to practice English skills while sharing smiles.

Some students are now taking bold steps forward — continuing their studies, applying for jobs, and even aiming to become nurses, community leaders, or politicians in their home countries to create meaningful change. One student recently landed a job in healthcare, a goal she had worked toward all year.

“I’m so proud of every one of them,” said the instructor. “They’re all amazing, and they know they can contact me anytime.”

This class was more than grammar and vocabulary — it was a place where dreams took shape, friendships grew, and confidence bloomed. We are proud of our students and inspired by their dedication, resilience, and heart.
