Clarkston Comes Together to Shape the Future of Public Art

Clarkston, GA — May 1, 2025
Last Thursday evening, the heart of Clarkston was on full display as community members gathered for an inspiring and collaborative Mural Input Session at Refuge Coffee Co. The event brought together neighbors, artists, and local leaders in celebration of the city’s diversity and creativity.

Hosted by Living Walls in partnership with DeKalb County Super District 6, District 4, the City of Clarkston, and the Clarkston Community Center, the evening introduced the three finalist muralists for the upcoming underpass mural at North Indian Creek Drive and East Ponce De Leon Avenue.
Throughout the session, each artist shared their vision and creative process while listening closely as residents shared what Clarkston means to them. From stories of heritage and migration to values of unity and resilience, the community expressed a rich tapestry of ideas—each one adding depth to the future mural’s potential message.

Clarkston, often celebrated as one of the most diverse square miles in America, stood true to its spirit during the event. Residents from all backgrounds offered heartfelt feedback on what themes, symbols, and imagery they’d like to see reflected in the final mural. Artists took detailed notes, absorbing the collective wisdom and aspirations of the people who call Clarkston home.
The next step in this journey will be the final design presentation, where the selected artist will unveil their mural concept based on community input. This final meeting will serve as both a celebration and a moment of decision as Clarkston prepares to transform a common underpass into a vibrant, meaningful piece of public art.
Stay tuned for details on the next gathering—and thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke up, and helped shape the visual story of Clarkston.
